Could music help treat depression?

If you turn on the radio when you want to cheer yourself up, you may have the right idea according to a new study.

Scientists in Finland carried out a study involving 79 participants and concluded that music therapy is useful in treating short-term depression.

The research, which was published in the British Journal of Psychiatry, found that people who participated in music therapy reported less anxiety and depression than those who did not.

All participants were given counselling and medication, but 33 also had 20 sessions with a music therapist, where they listened to music and carried out drumming sessions.

Three months later, the patients who were given music therapy were found to have better scores when it came to overcoming feelings of anxiety and depression than the other group.

Professor Christian Gold, from the University of Jyväskylä, said: “Our trial has shown that music therapy, when added to standard care helps people to improve their levels of depression and anxiety.”

“Music therapy has specific qualities that allow people to express themselves and interact in a non-verbal way – even in situations when they cannot find the words to describe their inner experiences.

We recommend using any relaxing music and particularly binaural beats relaxation music for depression.
